Doctor Who: Dan Starkey Plays Sontaran or Potato?

It may be difficult at times to differentiate between a potato and a Sontaran. As such, Dan Starkey, better known as our favorite Sontaran, Strax, attempted to figure out which was which.

It was not that long ago when the line between a potato and a Sontaran was blurred. A photograph, allegedly of a potato, sold for over $1 million approximately seven months ago. Of course, with that price tag, it is easy to imagine that the photograph really captured the essence of an embryonic Sontaran.

Given that Sontarans are so very similar in appearance to the common spud, it is not a surprise that someone at Doctor Who: The Fan Show decided to create a game called ‘Sontaran or Potato?’ Even better, Dan Starkey, the actor who portrays Strax, was brought in as a guest to look at eight images, trying to determine which depicted a potato, and which was a close up of a Sontaran.

After a rough start, Starkey found his groove, doing well overall (with six out of eight) as he determined which of these images belonged to his kind. Alas, Strax himself was not depicted, although Starkey thought one of those images was a close up of himself. If anything, this little game underscored how similar this race of warriors is in appearance to Earth potatoes, especially if a Sontaran himself could not always tell the difference.

But really, should we be overly surprised? Even the most fervent Whovian may not be able to tell the difference between a close up of a Sontaran’s head, or that of a potato. Starkey’s performance, even if it does seem to be a bit low in terms of correct answers, was actually quite impressive, given the circumstances.

Test yourself to see how well you do in the game. It’s relatively short, lasting just over two minutes, and probably will not be the worst time sink of the day.
