Doctor Who Stars Make Bank at Conventions

Ever wonder how much your favorite stars make off of their appearances at conventions? Well, for the alumni of Doctor Who, it can be quite the profitable experience.

If you want to see your favorite Doctor Who actors at a convention, it is going to cost a pretty penny. With the prices for the tickets, and then to meet the actors, and even get their autographs and/or pictures with them, it can be quite the expensive proposition. And, of course, the more popular the actor, the more it will cost for a few seconds in their presence.

But how much of that money do the stars take home? Well, it turns out that they receive quite the hefty sum. For instance, Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith recently brought home close to $250,000 per weekend for several weeks. With the popularity of Doctor Who, anyone who portrayed the Doctor is in demand, easily making six digits for an appearance at the local convention.

With the salaries that some of these actors received during their time on the show, just a few weekends a year may dwarf their television payouts, even for the most recent actors to portray the Doctor — their rabid fan bases will ensure that they remain in popular demand.

It is certainly hard to begrudge these actors their good fortune in being able to earn such a substantial amount for a few hours a weekend. And, with Doctor Who being as popular as it is, this is certainly the best time to cash in, getting those checks to spend time amongst the fans.

Of course, one has to wonder how long this will last. It is great that the stars of Doctor Who continue to be so very beloved, but for how long? Even if the show continues to do well, will the fans eventually say that enough is enough of the high costs associated with getting a few seconds with their heros? Considering the rough economic shape in which humanity currently finds itself, how sustainable is the current geek culture?
