Samwell Tarly

Warning: tin-foil fan theory alert.

Someone has to tell the tale of what happens on Game of Thrones. In other words, there has to be one historian or narrator who writes it all down for future generations. I believe that person to be Samwell Tarly. George Lucas was once asked who the narrator of the Star Wars story was. Lucas had a theory:

"The entire story of Star Wars is actually being recounted to the keeper of the Journal of the Whills—remember that?—a hundred years after the events of Return of the Jedi by none other than R2-D2."

I believe we should consider Sam along these same lines. Think about it: As a steward in service to Maester Aemon, Sam would have read the incoming messages from all the great houses of Westeros, and penned responses to theml. Sam is, without a doubt, the most knowledgeable person we’ve been introduced to on Game of Thrones. And now that he’s at the Citadel in Oldtown, Sam will only expand his already impressive knowledge of the history of the realm.

My theory is that, once the dust has settled, Sam will be the Grand Maester to the new ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, whoever that ends up being. And if Sam is our narrator, he has to live long enough to tell the whole story.

Or he might die when his father finds him and guts him for stealing Heartsbane. One of those.
