Theory: Is the man in black Arnold?

facebooktwitterreddit

As soon as we learned about Ford’s mysterious partner the internet jumped at the idea that Arnold might be Westworld’s mysterious man in black.

As soon as we heard about Arnold I knew that a man in black is Arnold theory was going to catch fire on the internet. It would tie everything in such a neat bow and give the man in black such clear motivation for what he’s doing if he was Arnold wouldn’t it? I don’t think it’s that simple though, not by a long shot.

That man in black being Arnold, or a host copy of Arnold just feels too easy for Westworld. We still don’t actually know if the man in black assaulted Dolores or not, though the first episode heavily implied that he did.

So just the implication of something on Westworld doesn’t actually mean it’s the truth. In fact I’m starting to think that if something is heavily implied on Westworld you can expect the opposite. So is the man in black Arnold? Maybe, but I wouldn’t be so sure just yet.

We really don’t have any significant evidence pointing to the two being connected, other than we don’t know much about either. What we do know is that the man in black is searching for the maze to find the second level of the game. If the man in black and Arnold are the same person wouldn’t he already know everything about the game? The man in black helped Ford build Westworld, he would know every little detail. If Arnold’s code is what’s causing the hosts to remember then why wouldn’t Arnold know more about the maze?

It would tie everything in a neat bow for the man in black Arnold theory to be true, but if Westworld has taught us anything it’s that neat little bows are no fun at all.
