Breaking down the Westworld maze
The Westworld maze is one of the biggest mysteries in the hit show, so let’s break down what we know about it.
We know that the Westworld maze is a key to everything going on in the show. The man in black is searching for the maze because he thinks it leads to the next level of the game. The hosts know of the maze, or know of it somewhere deep in their programing, but we have yet to see a host actively seeking the maze. We also know that Ford has a new storyline for the park, which may have something to do with the mysterious Westworld maze.
We know that the man in black is on a mission to find the Westworld maze. The man in black has been coming to the park for thirty years, this means there’s a high probability that he was involved in the critical failure Westworld suffered thirty years ago. We also know the man in black says he doesn’t plan to leave Westworld this time, but the Westworld terms and conditions say that you can only stay in the park for twenty eight days at a time, then you have to decompress. Does this mean the man in black thinks the maze is the key to him staying in the park?
We also know that Ford is creating a new storyline for the park. We saw part of the Wyatt storyline involving Teddy in episode 3 “The Stray.” We don’t know what Ford is attempting to accomplish with his new storyline, but it certainly feels like it might tie in to the maze.
We also heard from Lawrence’s daughter that the maze was not for the man in black. If the maze isn’t for the guests then it has to be for the hosts right? Perhaps the maze was put into the park by the mysterious Arnold as the final piece of his pyramid proving that the hosts are real beings.
It seems likely that there is some connection between the man in black and Arnold, though we don’t know what yet, and we doubt that they are the same person. If it’s Arnold’s code that was left in the hosts and is making the hosts start to rebel then perhaps Arnold is also the creator of the maze. Perhaps he was farther along before he died, or perhaps Ford lied to us and he’s not dead at all.
