Catherine Tate’s Amusing Segment on BBC Breakfast

BBC Breakfast host Charlie Stayt had an embarrassing moment when he mistakenly attributed a catchphrase from a character from Little Britain to a character from The Catherine Tate Show.

On Monday’s episode of BBC Breakfast, actor Catherine Tate was discussing characters from The Catherine Tate Show with hosts Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty. During the segment, Stayt quoted the catchphrase, “Yes, but, no, but…” The only problem is that the character who is infamous for this line is not Tate’s cheeky teen Lauren Cooper, but Matt Lucas’ vaguely equivalent personality Vicky Pollard from Little Britain. To be fair to Stayt, he prefaced his quotation by saying that he was sure that he would get it wrong.

As was to be expected, Tate had a fantastic sense of humor about the mix-up. She briefly gave him a hard time to see him squirm, and he echoed the Tenth Doctor’s phrase by saying, “Sorry! I’m so sorry!” She then laughed and quickly went into character as Lauren.

"Am I bovvered? Am I bovvered by it? Am I bovvered that you got it wrong? Look at my face. Is my face bovvered that you got my catchphrase wrong? No! Look. Face. Charlie. Face. Bovvered. I ain’t. Bovvered."

Of course, I was reminded of the famous Comic Relief sketch in which David Tennant plays Mr. Logan, an English teacher who butts heads with Lauren.

More from Winter is Coming

I had two other thoughts while watching the BBC Breakfast segment. Firstly, it would be fantastic to see Lauren and Vicky in a sketch together. Would they become best mates, or fierce enemies? Secondly, now that Lucas is on Doctor Who, it would be an especially good time for Tate’s character, Donna Noble, to make a reappearance. The comedic chemistry between the two would be stuff of legends. I know what you are going to say: Lauren is dead and Donna would die if she remembered her time with the Doctor. I counter those arguments with the fact that we are dealing with both a) comedy shows that present absurd situations and b) a science fiction program that is known for having wibbly wobbly timey wimey solutions to such problems.

Back in January, however, Tate stated that she did not think that it was possible for Donna to return to the show. Oh, well. At least we have the new Big Finish audio adventures with her and the Tenth Doctor.

Update October 21st, 2016: Yesterday on Lorraine, Tate agreed with the host that a timey wimey solution could be to meet Donna before she met the Tenth Doctor. The clip can be viewed at Daily Star.
