Game of Thrones extras in Malpartida receiving military training

The bulk of the Game of Thrones cast is now in Seville. And while pictures out of the area remain scarce, two stops down the Game of Thrones Season 7 filming tour of Spain, in Malpartida de Caceres, extras continue to whisper like little birds about their experiences. Mild SPOILERS follow.

Last we heard, the 400-or-so lucky men who has been chosen from the thousands of hopefuls were being asked to try on Lannister armor, suggesting that at least part of the battle (or ambush) that will be filmed there will involve Cersei’s army. Now, while Lena Headey (Cersei) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime) hanging out in Seville between takes, said army is being readied.

Yesterday, we posted a couple of images of sets of Lannister armor on racks upon racks. Today, we’re hearing via ABCSeville that the extras who will be wearing said armor are now undergoing training on how to use it. Roughly translated from Spanish:

"Extras in the series “Game of Thrones” , who will participate in the upcoming filming in the border area of Malpartida de Caceres, are receiving instruction from former US military types to handle the weight of 25 kilo costumes that will have to wear when they take part in the enormous battle to be shot in the area."

For those not familiar with the metric system, 25 kilograms is equivalent to 55 pounds. No wonder they wanted people with previous military training and who were very physically fit.

Reportedly, the ad hoc training camp that extras are calling “base camp” is the size of a football field. All this, and the show won’t even be filming there for another two weeks. Before that they’ll be stopping at the Castillo de Almodóvar, where they’ll be filming from November 4th-16th.
