Two Petitions Gain Strong Support to Keep the Doctor Who Experience Open
By David Hill
Sad about the Doctor Who Experience closing shop next year? Well, two online petitions to keep the attraction open are garnering strong support.
The other day, we wrote about the impending demise of a beloved attraction. The Doctor Who Experience, a place where Whovians can congregate and explore the relics of the past and present, is set to close its doors. The five year lease that the BBC had signed on its location is set to expire in the summer of 2017, and there are not any plans to extend that partnership.
This is quite the unfortunate news for Whovians. They are not, however, taking it lying down. Already, petitions have cropped up looking to garner support to keep the beloved attraction open. In those petitions, the organizers speak to far more than their love of the show, but what the Experience means to the community.
As of the writing of this article, Save Cardiff’s ‘Doctor Who Experience’ from closure! by Bex Ferriday has been signed over 5,330 times with a goal of 6,000 signatures, and Keep the Doctor who experience open by Steve Van Teeffelen has been signed over 1,930 times with a goal of 2,500 signatures.
It makes sense to look at the larger picture. Yes, it would be a tragic loss to have such a place where Whovians can enjoy their favorite show disappear. In addition to this, though, is the loss of revenue and jobs which are generated for the community, both in the attraction itself, and surrounding businesses. Tourism that comes to Cardiff for the worldwide phenomenon that is Doctor Who cannot be understated.

Likewise, the idea that the Experience would come to an end does not make sense for the BBC. After all, they are looking for ways to generate revenue, and closing down such a popular attraction would not help the cause. Yes, they may save a few pounds because they are not spending money on rent, but does that mitigate the possible profits and exposure?
It is uncertain at this point whether or not the attraction will find a new home. Perhaps the best idea, barring a permanent location, would be to turn it into a travelling show. This way, fans from all over could experience the… Experience without having to venture very far from their homes. People will spend a bit more for convenience, after all.
