Weeping Angels Ranked Most Frightening Doctor Who Aliens by GameSpot
By David Hill
The topic of the most frightening aliens on Doctor Who is always one that will cause some discussion. There is one in particular about which many Whovians agree.
Over its history, there have been quite a few iconic aliens on Doctor Who. Foes like the Daleks and the Cybermen have been around since the early days of the program, forming proverbial thorns in the Doctor’s side. Both creatures can be the stuff of nightmares, and have more than cemented their places as some of the more frightening creatures that the Doctor would have to face.
Yet, as terrifying as those creatures can be, they were not ranked by Joal Ryan of GameSpot as the most frightening alien on Doctor Who. Instead, that honor went to the Weeping Angels, a relative newcomer to the Whoniverse.
It makes sense as to why the Weeping Angels would get that honor. That they are creatures which look like the statuary on buildings and in cemeteries makes it so that they can insidiously invade, waiting to feed by sending their victims back in time. Even worse is that an image of an Angel has the same abilities. And not being able to blink or look away when you are afraid? This is the essence of the terror that they invoke. They are the divine turned demonic.

While one can certainly argue that the Weeping Angels are deserving of this distinction, that lack of their history on the show makes them an interesting choice. The Cybermen caused the first ever regeneration on Doctor Who, cementing their status as horrific foes. And, as former humans who have lost their humanity and upgraded into machines, there is a bit of a nagging fear to the idea that technology will take us all over.
The Daleks, while they may look like salt and pepper shakers with plungers and egg beaters, have also established themselves as ongoing enemies. With their extreme xenophobia, and desire to exterminate everyone who is different, they could be considered frightening as well. Just look at their human counterparts, not only throughout history, but who are currently causing problems in governments around the world.
