Ken Grieve, the director of the classic Doctor Who serial ‘Destiny of the Daleks,’ died on Tuesday, November 15th, 2016.

Earlier today, we reported the news that Daniel Nettheim, the director of Doctor Who Series Nine’s two part story ‘The Zygon Invasion’/’The Zygon Inversion,’ has returned for Series Ten. While this has not changed, we have some sad news to report about another former director of the show. According to a report by Marcus of Doctor Who News, Ken Grieve died on Tuesday, November 15th, 2016.

More from Winter is Coming

Born on March 17th, 1942 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Grieve started his career as a camera operator, making his directorial debut on the long-running television series Coronation Street in 1974. After this, he worked on the series This Year Next Year, The XYY Man, Send in the Girls, BBC2 Play of the Week, and The Omega Factor, leading up to the Doctor Who Series Seventeen opening serial ‘Destiny of the Daleks.’ The story features the second appearance of Davros (David Gooderson’s only time playing the part), and the first appearance of Lalla Ward as Romana. The script for this was the final one that Terry Nation was officially credited as having written. Both Grieve and script editor Douglas Adams claimed, however, that Adams wrote nearly all of it. Grieve was also a contributor to the 2007 documentary Davros Connections.

Grieve’s last grouping of work ranged from the mid to late 2000s — the series The Royal, The BillCasualty, and, finally, Law & Order: UK in 2009. He also previously taught at both the National Film School and Manchester Film School.

A transcript from Southsiders quotes him as saying the following:

"One of the great privileges of being a director and working with actors, or in documentaries, you get a chance to study the people you’re working with and you see the fantastic uniqueness of everybody’s face. Everybody looks interesting, I mean everybody’s got a story."
