The Playful Adult Humor of the Revival of Doctor Who

Doctor Who and dirty jokes go together quite well. But which of these jokes have been the best in the revival of the show?

Over the years, Doctor Who has had its moments where its status as a family show can be called into question. Pretty much any time that Captain Jack or River Song appeared on screen, one knew that some sort of sexual innuendo would occur. And let us not forget the Twelfth Doctor at the beginning of Series Eight, when actor Peter Capaldi “inadvertently” flipped off Robin Hood.

Indeed, these moments have been a hallmark on the show. As such, Radio Times took a look at ten of the best raunchy moments in the revival of Doctor Who. In that list, we can find everything from the sonic screwdriver being a euphemism for a certain part of anatomy, to Missy tickling a Dalek’s “orbs,” to jokes about Queen Elizabeth’s chaste nickname no longer being true.

Some of these moments are subtle. For instance, when Jenny Flint takes off her outer clothing before fighting some enemies, the Doctor’s screwdriver lifts up before he, somewhat self-consciously, lowers it. To the mature mind, it is certainly clear where that was going.

In all seriousness, which may be a bit difficult in a post dedicated to dirty jokes, these things happen. Writers and actors get bored at times, just like anyone else, and look to see what they can get away with in various scenes. It’s almost a natural reaction.

Just take a look at how many adult jokes are slipped into children’s shows and movies. At times, these nods seem to be for those adults stuck watching against their will; the children won’t understand, but the parents can get a laugh here and there. Disney is notorious for this. And shows like Animaniacs and Rocko’s Modern Life became cult classics amongst adults for that very reason. Someone needed to provide entertainment for those forced to view the same content over and over again.

While Doctor Who may want to be considered a family friendly show, it certainly has its moments where it is not. These little jokes, often hidden in quick segments or in throwaway lines, add even more enjoyment. Which are your favorites? Let us know in the comments below.
