Westworld Theory: Ashley Stubbs and Elsie Hughes

This Westworld theory deals with the unknown fate of security chief Ashley Stubbs and programmer Elsie Hughes.

SPOILER WARNING: THIS WESTWORLD THEORY POST CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM RECENT EPISODES OF WESTWORLD. IF YOU AREN’T CAUGHT UP ON WESTWORLD AVOID THIS POST! THIS POST ALSO CONTAINS CONJECTURE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF WESTWORLD, IF YOU DON’T WANT TO HEAR POSSIBLE WESTWORLD SPOILERS AVOID THIS POST!

We know that behavioral programmer Elsie Hughes is dead right? We saw Bernard kill her didn’t we… or did we? We certainly saw Bernard grab Elsie, and it was implied that he killed her, but we don’t know for sure. This is Westworld and if you don’t see the body, like you did with Theresa Cullen, then you can’t be sure someone is dead. Heck, even when you see the body sometimes people aren’t dead in Westworld.

So the last we saw of Elsie she was investigating who was sending information via satellite out of the park when Bernard grabbed her… and the last we saw of Ashley Stubbs he was investigating Elsie’s location marker being active in an area of the park no staff had been to when he was jumped by Ghost Nation hosts.

The simple explanation is that Ford knew that Elsie’s location marker would draw in Stubbs, who had been getting suspicious of Bernard. Ford then had the Ghost Nation hosts take care of Stubbs, but this feels too easy for Westworld.

What if Bernard either let Elsie go, or somehow Elsie managed to escape from Bernard. Elsie is a crack programmer and it would be well within her capabilities to lay low in the park and reprogram the ghost nation braves. If Elsie couldn’t trust Bernard who would she reach out too, probably Ashley Stubbs.

So what if Elsie and Ashley are still alive and in the park laying low? After the hosts finish off the Delos board and take control the only humans left to challenge them would be Ashley and Elsie, this would make for a fascinating storyline for Westworld season 2.
