39. Benjen Stark

Benjen, we hardly knew ye. Then you came back, and we rejoiced. Benjen is the guy who made the Night’s Watch look like a noble, honorable calling. Although Jon Snow found out it wasn’t as glamorous as he had hoped, we still credit Benjen for putting the Night’s Watch into his head in the first place.

Although Benjen was onscreen for only a few moments in Season 1 before disappearing, something told us we weren’t done with him yet. Throughout the seasons, people would periodically ask after him, keeping him alive in our memories. As it happens, Benjen died after heading beyond the Wall, but the power of the Three-Eyed Raven kept him from turning into a mindless wight.

Although his appearance in Season 6 felt a little too convenient, we were thrilled to see the frozen face of Joseph Malwe appear from under the cloak in “Blood of My Blood.” We admire this Black Brother for his bravery and determination even in the face of certain doom. Will Benjen be back, or will he quietly help battle the White Walkers from behind the scenes?
