The 50 Best Game of Thrones Characters, Ranked
46. The High Sparrow
The unnamed High Sparrow is a man who learned humility late in life. He was a successful cobbler, but gave up his wealth in order to help the common folk. One has to wonder: was he always full of good intentions, or was there a master manipulator hidden between the folds of his dirty rags?
The High Sparrow is powerfully devoted to the Gods. What was initially dismissed as a group of religious fanatics by Cersei quickly became the de facto rulers of King’s Landing. From early on, we can see how the High Sparrow slowly chips away at everyone’s defensive walls, offering solutions for those who have just a little bit of faith. He even has the ability to put Lady Olenna Tyrell in her place, which isn’t an easy task.
Unfortunately, the Faith Militant gains too much power in King’s Landing, and they use violence to keep themselves on top. Too much force on the wrong person can result in deadly consequences, like the wildfire explosion in the Great Sept of Baelor. It was fun knowing the High Sparrow while he lasted. Jonathan Pryce brought the perfect balance of a humble and terrifying, with a manipulative streak bubbling just below the surface.
