Season 7 filming: A new set goes up in the city of Cáceres

With filming on a major battle scene at Los Barruecos nearly at an end, the Game of Thrones production is getting ready to make a stop off in the city of Cáceres, where it’ll shoot material next week, on December 14 and 15.

Unlike at el Barrueco de Arriba, the extras involved in the Cáceres shoot didn’t need military training, so it should be a simpler affair. Or it won’t involve a battle, at any rate—it’s hard to call any outdoor shoot on Game of Thrones “simple,” as these images of the sets in progress, posted by @javiborrega on Twitter, prove.

The production has brought in a prop fountain.

So far, we’ve been assuming that Cáceres will stand in for King’s Landing. These pictures reinforce that.

And if there was any doubt that all of this work if for Game of Thrones (ABC has been shooting Still Star-Crossed, a new drama from Shonda Rhimes, in the area), another Twitter user—@Jaehaerys2016—blew up one of @javiborrega’s pics so we can see the “GoT” markings on one of the tables.

And there’s a better view of that fountain.

So what might be filmed in this area. It’s impossible to know for sure, although because it’s so out in the open, we can probably expect some photos from the area as it’s happening. However, showrunners David Benioff and Weiss may have given us a clue. Before Season 6 aired, the pair appeared on the Scriptnotes Podcast to chat about their work. They were writing Season 7 at the time, and mentioned that what they originally conceived as a small-scale scene set in the Red Keep throne room had turned in to “a massive parade through the streets of King’s Landing.”

The Game of Thrones production will be using quite a few areas of the city—including the Piazza Santa Maria, the Plaza de los Golfines and the Plaza de las Veletas—for this shoot. Is this where that “parade” will happen?
