Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi Does Not Know How Long He Will Stay, but Wants to for a While
By David Hill
There has been a great deal of speculation as to when Peter Capaldi will leave Doctor Who after this season. According to Peter Capaldi, he wants to remain in the role for a long time to come, but does not yet know how long that will be.
In most matters, there will come a day when it is time to move on. No matter what walk of life one is on, it is likely that at some point it will be time to leave that world behind, and find something else to do. Such transitions are at the core of Doctor Who, with the constant changing of the Doctor and his companions. Nothing lasts forever, and the show hammers that point home with regularity.
With that being the case, at some point in time, Peter Capaldi will leave the show, and the Thirteenth Doctor will take his place. Although the timing of when that will happen is still unknown, there has been rampant speculation that he will leave after this coming season. With a new companion for Series Ten, and a new showrunner starting with Series Eleven, the idea that Doctor Who could wipe the slate virtually clean and do another soft reboot does seem valid.
While Capaldi has been relatively silent on his plans after this season, he may have finally given us some insight as to his hopes. While he has been “trying to avoid” making a final decision, he admitted in a recent interview that he will not be the Doctor forever. He does hope, however, to remain in that role for a long time to come.

It would be great to see Capaldi continue on as the Doctor into the next few seasons. With all of the changes on the show, he would lend a level of continuity, helping to ease the transition between Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall. No matter what changes, we would know that a familiar face would be there to delight us all with his adventures.
Likewise, as a long time fan of the show, this was his dream role. Capaldi wanted to be the Doctor from the time he began acting. Now that he has the role, and given his long time fandom, it is hard to imagine that he would willingly let it go after just three seasons aboard the TARDIS.
