Will The Winds of Winter come out this year?

George R.R. Martin has been, well, let’s call it ‘waffly’ regarding his progress on the sixth book in his Song of Ice and Fire series. It’s been six years since A Dance With Dragons hit store shelves, and fans are salivating for more.

So where is Martin at? He shed some light on the subject while responding to a comment on his Not a Blog:

"Not done yet, but I’ve made progress. But not as much as I hoped a year ago, when I thought to be done by now. I think it will be out this year. (But hey, I thought the same thing last year)."

So that answer is kind of a non-answer. Maybe, but maybe not. It’s being written but that’s basically all we’ve got. We have no idea what kind of deal Martin has with his publishers, and sometimes too much speculation about the unknown will drive you mad.

As we noted in a recent Small Council post, we at Winter is Coming are staying hopeful that we’ll get The Winds of Winter by year’s end. There’ve been plenty of chapters released online (or read at conventions) over the years, so they may have to tide you over until the book is finally out.

Alright. Let’s pivot back to Season 7 with a new caveat: we’ll be talking about more substantive SPOILERS now. Beware.
