Can the Doctor Be a Woman? The Complex Relationship of Doctor Who

facebooktwitterreddit

The Doctor may regenerate into a new body when he dies but there has always been one thing in common between each regeneration: they’ve all been white men.

Since the dawning of the show, Doctor Who has featured a white man in the role. So many have asked throughout the years if maybe a woman or a person of color could take on the role! So far, we haven’t seen any indication that that will happen.

It doesn’t make sense. The Master could regenerate into a woman so why can’t the Doctor? Part of the reason may be because the show runners were too afraid of making a change that big to a character loved for the last fifty plus years. But honestly, it is kind of time.

When Doctor Who started, yeah. If you would have pitched this show with a woman in the lead, it would never have gotten done. Even the reboot probably wouldn’t have happened if a woman was going to play the doctor.

But there isn’t really an excuse anymore. The fanbase to the show has returned and many are young girls. Imagine how cool that would be? Seeing a woman take on the role of the Doctor would be so revolutionary!

So, who is going to be our next Doctor? Right now, we don’t even know when Peter Capaldi is planning on leaving. But hopefully the show runners are open to the idea because that’d be a wonderful transition from the beloved twelfth Doctor.

Honestly, I’d just rather see a woman in the role. It’d be completely different and also might be great for the show. That’s not saying anything against all the Doctors before, it’d just be an awesome change.
