Controversial Biography of Doctor Who Producer Re-released

The controversial biography of Doctor Who Producer John Nathan-Turner is being re-released with a new title and new juicy bits.

Doctor Who celebrated it’s 50th anniversary in 2013, and it was a big year for looking back and examining a beloved part of popular culture. A controversial biography of Doctor Who producer John Nathan-Turner was first released in that anniversary year, but is now getting a brand new re-released with a new title (and lots more juicy tidbits).

When it was first published, JNT: The Life and Scandalous Times of John Nathan-Turner caused quite a stir and revealed some dubious moments in the show’s past with Nathan-Turner. The re-release is titled Totally Tasteless: The Life of John Nathan-Turner which is a reference to the  polarizing producer’s description of what he felt the Sixth Doctor’s costume should look like.

The remastered book has a new cover from renowned Doctor Who artist, Andrew Skilliter, and is appropriately bright and quirky- a little psychedelic even – and is a nice nod to the eccentric Sixth Doctor, Colin Baker. The second edition of the opinionated biography is basically two books in one.

The first half is a reprinting of the original, scathing biography, that reveals the troubles Nathan-Turner had carrying the show into the ’80s and replacing the beloved Tom Baker. JNT, as he was known to his friends and colleagues, received constant pushback for his decisions about the show, and he was a polarizing figure among cast, crew, and fans. He was passionate about his work at Doctor Who, but met with an unfortunate and heartbreaking end.

The second half the of the re-release is all new and takes readers through the making of the biography and the process of biography author, Richard Marson. Marson dishes on all the controversy he met when researching JNT’s life, often having to listen to folks lament and complain about how they were treated.

Both the biography and the new behind the scenes material seem like a really juicy read, and will offer an excellent “insider” look at a turbulent time in Doctor Who history.
