Mark Gatiss has pledged to bring back one of the classic monsters of Doctor Who for Season 10, the recently reintroduced Ice Warriors!

With the announcement that we have only about ten weeks to wait between now and the premiere of Doctor Who Season 10, the first of the hype train videos has hit the web. This one features Mark Gatiss, and he’s hyping a very big return this season to the Whoniverse.

Yes, the habit of bringing back classic monsters is alive and well for Moffat’s last season, and we’ll once again we faced with the Ice Warriors, and their updated tribute to the big rubber alien costumes of the late 1960s from whence they first were introduced in the series.

This is not the first time Moffat has brought back the Ice Warriors. Though they had long lay dormant since 1974 and the Third Doctor’s reign, he revived them in the episode Cold War, when the 11th Doctor and Clara ran into them during a submarine adventure.

The Ice Warriors have always been a popular monster for the show to reference, including the Fifth Doctor, who references an unseen adventure with them during his first episode, and the Tenth Doctor who memorably referred to them as “a fine and noble race who built an empire out of snow” in the stand alone adventure The Waters of Mars.

So what exactly will the Ice Warriors be doing back again? In Season 8 they were more of an enemy than they had been previously. Gatiss name checked “Edgar Rice Burroughs” one of the classic writers who first invented the entire space opera/adventure genre with The Princess of Mars in the 1910s, and a “rip roaring” adventure. We can’t wait to find out.
