David Tennant has the secret to casting the new Doctor. According to him, the actor has to be and a Doctor Who “obsessive.”

On the eve of the premiere of the BBC’s Broadchurch, David Tennant is making the rounds in the press. Of course he’s talking about his character on the crime drama, Detective Inspect Alec Hardy. But he’s also getting peppered with questions about the new Doctor.

He has some thoughts about what it takes for an actor to be the thirteenth Doctor. He told The Times Magazine, it’s only Doctor Who “obsessives” who get “lured” into the role.

Tennant famously grew up as Whovian, and has been very vocal about his devotion to the long-running series. He cites other Who alumni as evidence.  “Peter Capaldi grew up as a big Doctor Who fan, as have writers Russell T Davies, Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall,” he explained. “You see, that’s the trick.”

According to Tennant, it takes a strong connection to the series to be able to immerse yourself in that world. He’s been fascinated by the show since he was a kid, and even loved the Daleks.  He remembers, “Doctor Who is “inescapable” in their house. It runs through our house as if through the middle of a stick of rock,” he said. “Our life has a Doctor Who backbone.”

Tennant is even married to Doctor Who costar, Georgia Moffet, who is also the daughter of another Doctor, Peter Davison. Tennant’s ties run deep, and he thinks this is a must for anyone thinking of the playing the role in the future.
