22. Littlefinger and Lysa

Poor Lysa. Yes, she was cuckoo-bananas and almost threw her niece out of a skylight, but still…poor Lysa. She loved a man — Petry “Littlefinger” Baelish — who was never, EVER going to love her back, and he knew it. Littlefinger took advantage of her affection to take control of the Vale, and when Lysa became too erratic to be trusted, he got rid of her. Poor, naive, nutso Lysa.

To be fair, what Lysa had for Littlefinger didn’t so much much resemble love as a teenage infatuation carried unwisely into adulthood. In some ways, Lysa never seems to have grown out of her adolescence — her refusal to take a stand during the War of the Five Kings and her coddling of her young (but not THAT young) son are other indications of her immaturity. I don’t know if she was ever going to find a partner who would make her content, but she definitely deserved better than Littlefinger. Everyone does.

Lysa’s love isn’t a happy love story, but it’s another example of the variety of relationships on display on this show.
