Seems like everybody has an opinion about casting the new Doctor, and now writer Neil Gaiman has made his knows. He wants Gillian Anderson to be number 13.
It seems like everyone has somebody in mind to replace Peter Capaldi, and Neil Gaiman thinks Gillian Anderson would be an excellent fit. Since Capaldi announced his departure from the show last month, the internet speculation machine has been churning with rumors about who should be, who will be, and who might be the thirteenth Doctor.
Everybody has a guess about who and when, and Doctor Who writer Neil Gaiman has a couple of actresses on his wish list.
Gaiman told Radio5 he thinks diversifying casting is a good thing. “Needless to say I’d love to see a woman Doctor.” He explained that “the time is absolutely right” for a female incarnation of the Time Lord.
His picks include X-Files and The Fall alumni, Gillian Anderson. He says, “I don’t think there’s anything Gillian can’t do.” But, he goes on, “If we have to go for an older Doctor it would be Helen Mirren.”
Gaiman wrote two episodes of Doctor Who, including “The Doctor’s Wife” in 2011 and “Nightmare in Silver” in 2013. Most recently, he’s written an adaptation of his novel, American Gods in which, coincidentally, Gillian also stars.
The rumor mill has been cranking out all sorts of hopes and wishes for the new Doctor, but it seems like we’re going to have to wait a really long time to see who the new showrunner, Chris Chibnall will choose.

Peter Capaldi will end his run in the 2017 Christmas special, with the new Doctor taking the reigns in the same episode. Although filming probably won’t start until sometime later in 2018, at least we’ll know once and for all who the newest Time Lord will be.
