Let’s compare the official poster for Game of Thrones season 7 to all the fan-made ones
By Dan Selcke
Yesterday, HBO finally, finally released an official teaser poster for Game of Thrones season 7. Behold the battle of ice and fire:
The poster is good and evocative, although it’s working overtime not to give anything about the season away. We thought it’d be fun to compare the new poster to some of the fan-made creations that have popped up over the past few months. There have been many.
The last thing we saw in Game of Thrones season 6 was Daenerys setting sail for Westeros. Many fans used that idea as their jumping-off point.
But there’s more than one queen in Westeros. Fans incorporated Cersei, or the idea of Cersei, into many of their designs.
Mashup posters were also very popular. Cersei and Daenerys are plenty interesting on their own, but fans are especially looking forward to when they share a scene together. You get the idea that they may not both walk away.
And of course, the prospect of a meeting, friendly or otherwise, between Daenerys and Jon Snow jogged many imaginations.
Bran got some love, too.
Other fans were mindful of those pesky White Walkers, who will surely be causing more trouble as we get closer to the endgame.
So most of these posters get into a lot more detail than HBO’s, which is to be expected. Much as we’d like to see Jon and Daenerys staring across a table at each other on a poster, HBO probably wants to keep that event, if it happens, as a surprise. There was at least one fan who took the subtle route: Moon Mango sent us this evocative image through Facebook.
I actually love this design. It implies a world of hurt for the people of Westeros without showing much of anything.
Finally, there’s a whole class of posters inspired by a suite of potential SPOILERS about the coming season. Go no further if you don’t want to know too much.
Basically, spoilers have it that, at some point late in the season, the Night King will kill one of Daenerys’ dragons and take it as a new mount. That got a lot of fans going.

Should this event actually come to pass, HBO’s obviously not gonna slap it on a poster right out of the gate. We’ll have to wait a bit longer to learn the truth of it all.
So what do you guys think? Is the HBO poster on par with what the fans came up with?
