CMON announces A Song of Ice and Fire miniature tabletop game
By Corey Smith
The world of A Song of Ice and Fire merchandise continues to expand. This time, tabletop game company CMON is making a miniature game in coordination with Dark Sword Miniatures, Inc. Based upon the novels by George R.R. Martin (not based on the show), CMON promises that the game will allow players to “control units of troops and heroes with easy to pick-up rules and fast-paced, brutal gameplay. ” The full title is long: A Song of Ice and Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game: Stark vs Lannister.
Here’s a nice roundup of some of the features of the game:
Miniature games can have a steep learning curve, but CMON and Dark Sword have vowed to make their Song of Ice and Fire game easy for new players to pick up.The miniatures are pre-assembled, for example, so you won’t have to spend hours bending over a desk with a tiny paintbrush. That’s not to say the game won’t be involved. CMON laid out what the gameplay is like:
"The A Song of Ice and Fire: Tabletop Miniatures Game lets players take control of their favorite Houses from the novels, represented by trays of high-quality, pre-assembled miniatures, and lead them into battle against their opponents. Players can recreate their favorite moments from the series or create their own stories. What if the Red Wedding never happened, and Robb Stark assaulted King’s Landing? Now fans can find out!"
Battles can range in size from full-scale conflicts like the Battle of the Blackwater to smaller skirmishes, like Jon escaping from the wildings in A Storm of Swords. But the most interesting moments may come from moments players create. So give Lyanna Mormont free reign and see what happens.
CMON will raise funds for the game through Kickstarter later year, and it’ll be in retail stores after that.
