14) CARICE VAN HOUTEN

The mysterious Red Woman is a handful, but well within the repertoire of Carice van Houten. Born in The Netherlands, she is a prolific actress with both European and Hollywood movie credits, including Rachel Stein in Black Book (2006), Carol in Repo Men (2010) and Anna in the gritty western Brimstone (2016), where she’s on the marquee alongside Thrones costar Kit Harington. She also has a sense of humor, having voiced characters on Robot Chicken (2016) and The Simpsons (2015).

Where have you seen van Houten before? It may have well been in Valkyrie (2008). She played Nina, the loyal wife of Nazi conspirator Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise). It was a small role, but also her first exposure to North American audiences. Although she had been a big star in relatively small budget European pictures (she’s won five Golden Calves, the Dutch equivalent of The Oscars), van Houten told The Daily Mail in 2009 she wasn’t ready for the overwhelming scope and perks of a big Hollywood production: “Nobody in Holland knows what Winnebago trailers are—if you ask for a chair, you are considered a diva.”

If you’re keeping track of your Game of Thrones extracurricular actor pairings, you’d be well-advised to check out Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos) as Jack Cope and van Houten as Ingrid Jonker in Black Butterflies (2011), a role that won her the Best Actress Award at the Tribeca Film Festival. Davos and Melisandre are lovers. It’s weird.

Van Houten has no no new projects listed on IMDb. Looks like Game of Thrones is keeping her busy.
