17) STEPHEN DILLANE
Stannis Baratheon was yet another doomed contender for the Iron Throne, and actor Stephen Dillane portrayed his strengths and weaknesses beautifully. That’s not surprising given the number of other notches on Dillane’s thespian pistol: he’s played Leonard Wolf in The Hours (2002), Charles Harker in Spy Game (2001), a National Security Advisor in Zero Dark Thirty (2012) and Merlin in King Arthur (2004)
Changing gears, Dillane appeared as Thomas Jefferson in HBO’s John Adams mini-series (2008, above). Other television credits include Rupert Keel in Hunted (2012) and Karenin in Anna Karenina (2000).
Dillane has amassed a nice pile of honors over his career. He won a BAFTA award for the TV movie The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall, and received a Tony for his turn as Henry in The Real Thing (2000) on Broadway. Shakespeare plays have been a big part of Dillane’s career: he has taken the stage as Macbeth and as Prospero in The Tempest, and his 1994 run as Hamlet is considered the best performance of the role in decades.
You might not suspect it from his grim work as Stannis, but Dillane has a romantic bent, as seen in his role as Charles Godwin in 1997’s drama-romance Firelight, alongside Sophie Marceau’s Elisabeth Laurier.
If you’re a Dillane fan, 2017 should make you happy, because the actor has two projects coming up: he plays William Godwin in Mary Shelley and an unnamed role in Darkest Hour (currently filming).
