‘Hey, they were in Game of Thrones’—Where else have you seen these 50 GoT cast members?
19) CONLETH HILL
Conleth Hill (his full Irish name is Conleth Seamus Eoin Croiston Hill) must feel comfortable as the mysterious eunuch Lord Varys—he seems attracted to slippery roles, such as the ‘archetypal chameleon’ commander in the play The White Guard or spymaster sir Ian Woodhead on Foyle’s War (2015). What’s with all the cloak and dagger gigs? Vulture asked him in 2015:
"I think the first spy I played was Günter Guillaume in Michael Frayn’s stage play Democracy. He was the famous East German spy who infiltrated West German chancellor Willy Brandt’s party. He worked in his offices. And ever since then, I seem to be offered them quite a lot! But I’m not complaining. [Laughs.] It’s all in the writing."
If you’d like to see a movie where Hill has a full head of hair, you’re in luck. He played Brockman opposite Larry David and Michael McKean (photo above) in Whatever Works (2009), Bernard Sugden in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011) and Harry Montague in Two Down (2015), among many other projects. His TV credits include Edward Darby in Suits (2013), Jared in The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle (2007), an Irish Tenor in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (2007) and a starter bit as Michael White on The Bill (2003).
Hill’s primary love is theater, and his stage resume looks like a university English major’s course syllabus. His performances, some on Broadway and London’s West End, include Faustus, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Playboy of the Western World and Waiting for Godot. He’s also earned Olivier Awards for Stones in his Pockets and The Producers. He recently appeared in the title role of MacBeth at Berkley, California, alongside Frances McDormand as Lady MacBeth (photo above, 2016).
By the way, Hill has family working on Game of Thrones: his younger brother, Ronan, has won two Emmys for his sound mixing work. And there might be more TV in his future: on his Not a Blog, George R.R. Martin has hinted that Hill might be the right guy to play the lead in a TV series based on his novel Tuf Voyaging.
Yes, Varys is headed back to Westeros, but you can also look for Hill as Douglas Innis in the horror-thriller The Isle in 2017.
