The sycophantic, lecherous Grand Maester Pycelle was easy to despise, but actor Julian Glover imbued him with a desperation we could understand as well. The English-born Glover is a trained classical stage actor with dozens of prestigious plays under his belt, and was made a Commander of the Order for the British Empire for “his services to drama” in 1993.

Despite his dedication to the live theater, Glover has appeared in a prolific number of film and television series, including as villain Walter Donovan in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (pictured with Alison Doody, above, in 1989). Heavy on the villains, Glover also starred as Aristotle Kristatos in For Your Eyes Only (1981), Brian Harcourt-Smith in The Fourth Protocol (1987) and Triopas in Troy (2004). He also provided the voice for Aragog in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002).

We’d be amiss if we didn’t mention Glover’s brief appearance as General Veers in Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back (above, 1980). Those few seconds onscreen have garnered him a lot of attention over the years, as he explained to the BBC in 2004:

"Well, appearing in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and For Your Eyes Only were two major film villains, which I’ve done rather a lot in my career. Star Wars was not a very big part but I enjoyed doing it and I get more fan mail for that than anything else I’ve ever done. It’s quite extraordinary. It comes in every day. Unbelievable."

If you are a TV buff, you might remember the London-born Glover from The Avengers (1961), Doctor Who (1963), Space 1999 (1975) and Merlin (2008).

Glover’s golden years are as busy as ever: we’ll be seeing him in We Still Steal the Old Way and Amy and Sophia in 2017.
