32) GEMMA WHELAN

As one of the honorable characters in the mix, it’s always a delight to see Yara Greyjoy hit the screen. Gemma Whelan imbues her with practicality and grit, and her strong background in comedy bring a gleam to her eye that makes her particularly memorable.

Whelan, who has also done stand-up, revels in what might be termed “naughty” material. In a 2015 interview with British Comedy Guide, she agreed that her talk show host character Chastity Butterworth enjoys the same “filthy” sense of humor as Yara Greyjoy:

"That’s true – either cheeky or elaborate. There are certain things you wouldn’t want your mum and dad to watch. Although my mum and dad love it, they love Thrones and they love Chastity, although my mum was like “darling, what’s ‘the safe word?'” – asking all these questions. And certain other things I can’t say here because there are people around. Certain Japanese practices."

Whelan’s motion picture and TV work consists largely of comedy and drama with comedy in it. She’s played Gwen’s Maid in The Wolfman (2010) and Lilliputian Rose in Gulliver’s Travels (2010). Her TV series credits are more extensive — she played Kate in Upstart Crow (2016, photo above), Ida Battersea in Hetty Feather (2016) and Kat Cassidy in Morgana Robinson’s the Agency (2016). We feel compelled to add that she also popped up in one episode of a TV mini-series titled The Day They came to Suck Out Our Brains! in 2013.

Whelan also appeared in the Mapp & Lucia TV mini-series (2014) where she played Irene Coles alongside Major Benjamin ‘Benjy’ Flint, jauntily portrayed by Thrones castmate Mark Gatiss (Tycho Nestoris).

With two TV series appearances (Uncle and The Moorside) running alongside Game of Thrones in 2017, Whelan is staying busy. She will also appear in the Squadron 42 video game with Thrones costar Liam Cunningham.
