4) ESSIE DAVIS

On Game of Thrones, Essie Davis plays Lady Crane, a motherly actress killed by Arya’s nemesis the Waif. The Tasmanian-born Davis has appeared in a number of big Hollywood films, including The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, where she played Maggie, a crew member of the futuristic ship Mjolnir. She also starred in the Australian/Canadian-produced psychological horror film The Babadook (2014), which earned her an AACTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, an AACTA International Award for Best Actress and a Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best Leading Actress.

Despite Davis’ notoriety, people often don’t recognize her on the street. It looks like one of her greatest talents is to vanish, chameleon-like, into every character she inhabits. “A lot of people don’t realize,” she told The Guardian in 2016, “that I’m the same person who has played all these parts.”

For Netflix lifers, Davis stars in the sumptuous Australian series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, based on Kerry Greenwood’s Phryne Fisher crime novels. Set in Melbourne in the 1920s, Davis plays a wild, adventure-loving war veteran billed as “more Mata Hari than Miss Marple.” ”I thought Phryne was fabulous,” Davis said in a 2012 interview with Daily Life, ”She’s like a female Indiana Jones with a better wardrobe.”

What’s coming up next for Davis? She will play the dowager queen Elizabeth in The White Princess, a STARZ Miniseries. Davis is also considering starring in a Phryne Fisher movie.
