Considering how badly weddings tend to turn out on Game of Thrones, it’s surprising that more than one couple has used the show as inspiration when planning their own nuptials. Then again, maybe it’s not surprising at all. Game of Thrones provides lots of visual references well-suited for weddings, from the gowns to the food to the wolves.
Well, not generally the wolves. Although photographer Katie Lee of Katherine Elena Photography included one when she joined with Something Perfect Events and Events by Elizabeth Ashley for a wedding shoot at Smithmore Castle in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. The Huffington Post has some terrific photos from the event — this is what happens when you go all out.
That’s model Austen Taylor Mauney standing in for Daenerys Targaryen, sporting a look inspired by her all-white Queen of Meereen outfits from season 5. Meanwhile, Courtney Edelman took on the role of Sansa…as she would be in alternate universe where Lady the direwolf didn’t die. (First direwolf down; never forget.)
The wolf, on loan from the Full Moon Farm Wolfdog Sanctuary, is named River. I’m sure the people at Full Moon have advice on how to keep wolves from stealing from the buffet.
Speaking of food, for this shoot, the Celestial Cakery prepared a cake that included dragon scales — I dunno if Daenerys would appreciate that or consider it animal cruelty.
Also there’s wine. Obviously.
The invitations had a Game of Thrones flair, too. These were inspired by the pet names Daenerys and Khal Drogo had for each other in season 1: My Sun and Stars and Moon of My Life.
I know what you’re thinking: that invitation only has suns and moons on it. Well, the sun is also a star. Bam — two birds with one stone.
