David Tennant offers advice to the new Doctor about the weight of the role, even though he claims he doesn’t know who will play him.
Appearing on The Andrew Marr show, David Tennant offers some advice to the new Doctor, even though he won’t ‘fess up which actor will take the role. He’s acts a little demure when questioned, but is quick to acknowledge it’s importance.
The Independent reports on the interview, in which the former Doctor and current Broadchurch actor, talks about the gravity of the role. Tennant says, “It’s part of our cultural furniture, Doctor Who, and that’s a huge honour to be in the middle of.”
As for the advice, Tennant warns, “it’s quite a responsibility as well and it changes your life. It opens a lot of doors.” He says without it, he wouldn’t have been able to do work in the West End, and for that, he’s really grateful. He goes on to say, “It’s an undertaking and it’s desperately exciting for whoever the next person might be… but yes, it takes a deep breath too.”

There have been so many rumors about who will play the new Doctor, it’s hard to sustain much interest in all the speculating. However, David Tennant might know more than he’s letting on. When pressed about whether he knows who will reprise the role, he replies, “I don’t… but I’d have to say that even if I did!” This feels like a giant tease to all the Doctor Who waiters and watchers, but that’s just how it is for Whovians these days.
Tennant currently plays Alec Hardy alongside another Doctor Who alum, Olivia Coleman in Broadchurch. Coincidentally, (but probably not, at all) Broadchurch is helmed but the future Doctor Who boss, Chris Chibnall, so there’s bound to be quite a bit of crossover.
