The TARDIS squares off against military tanks in this new Doctor Who teaser, which promises “unique hero.”

The folks over at the BBC just released this new Doctor Who teaser, featuring the TARDIS squaring off against a circle of menacing military tanks. In a dramatic voice over, the new companion Bill, played by Pearl Mackie, says: “He doesn’t have a tank or a warship, he has a box you can call for help.”

At that exact moment, the tanks fire on the TARDIS, and it disappears into the space-time continuum. The short video comes with the message, “The Doctor, a unique hero,” with the hashtags, “#TimeForHeroes” and “#DoctorWho.”

Although this isn’t likely to be pulled from any actual episode, it’s probably just a move meant to set the tone of the upcoming season, which starts in a few short weeks. The language in the tweet and in the trailer, echoes prior sentiments made by Steven Moffat. It’s interesting the trailer would have a “hero” theme, because Moffat has spoken quite a bit on the subject.

He had this to say at the Doctor Who Celebration, “A lot of our heroes depress me. But you know, when they made this particular hero, they didn’t give him a gun, they gave him a screwdriver to fix things. They didn’t give him a tank or a warship or an X-wing fighter, they gave him a call box from which you can call for help. And they didn’t give him a superpower or pointy ears or a heat ray…they gave him two hearts.”

The new Doctor Who trailer might be short, but it’s loaded with a lot of nostalgia and poignant symbols. As we drawer nearer to the premiere of Moffat and Capaldi’s last season, we can appreciate how special a hero Doctor Who really is.
