People have been speculating since before the season began whether or not Pearl Mackie would stay on Doctor Who into the next Doctor and Chibnall’s era as Bill. It seemed from the beginning that it was likely she would leave at the end of the season, but now she’s come out to say that her future with Doctor Who is “uncertain” and “not up to her”.

Her character, Bill Potts, has brought new life to Doctor Who right when it needed it most. Bill has changed the way people see the twelfth doctor and brought what every new companion brings — a breath of fresh air.

Her character came in at the beginning of the season to good reviews. The breath of fresh air was definitely taken well in her first episode. As the season has continued, opinions on Potts has changed. Some people believe that she has brought back the friendship and wit of the tenth Doctor and Donna Noble, bringing out a side of Capaldi’s doctor we never saw with Clara. On the other end of the spectrum, some people feel that she is too thick and her character has often been criticized as many times as she’s been praised.

What do we know?

On an episode of This Morning, Pearl Mackie talked about her chemistry with Peter Capaldi and the possibility of her continuing on the show.

"“I don’t know. Well, it’s not up to me, I don’t think, but I feel like Peter is such a wonderful Doctor. I think the dynamic he and I have playing The Doctor and Bill really works, [but] that’s not to say it wouldn’t work with a new Doctor. I think it’s always a new adjustment getting a new Doctor and that dynamic is different because you’re different actors and characters.”"

With most people of the Moffat era leaving, and with Chibnall gearing up to begin the new season, it makes sense to wonder if Pearl Mackie has already said no and is waiting for the right time. Leaving makes more sense, but that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t love to see Bill stick around with another Doctor.
