Screencap breakdown: The official trailer for Game of Thrones season 7
By Dan Selcke
In the home stretch, the trailer cuts quickly between a variety of scenes, all of it set to pulse pounding music. First, we have a brief glimpse of the Mountain in his new armor. It’s black, obviously.
There’s also this very muddy shot of people rushing down some stairs, or a gangplank. It looks like there’s water churning on the left side of the frame, so I’m guessing this happens in the same scene with the flaming ship, but it’s hard to be sure.
Then we’ve got Jon slamming Littlefinger into a wall in the Winterfell crypts! That moment is only properly experienced in GIF form:
This isn’t the first time a king or queen has threatened Littlefinger (remember when Cersei almost had him executed in season 2?), and thus far he’s managed to wriggle out of it. Let’s see if his luck changes in season 7.
Next, we’ve got some more shots from the Unsullied invasion of Casterly Rock:
Here’s an interesting shot in the midst of all this violence: Arya looks under a bed. What could she be looking for?
In my mind, the below shot can only be one thing: Jorah Mormont, his arm eaten away by greyscale, reaching through a hole in the cell where he’s quarantined. Where is he quarantined? Stay tuned.
More Dothraki action, as one of Dany’s warriors duel-wields arakhs against a super-dead Lannister soldier.
And below, Jon and Tormund Giantsbane run like hell from something. Odds are they’re part of the group running for their lives beyond the Wall in previous shots.
And now we enter the sexy part of the program with a pair of surprising scenes. First, Missandei opens Grey Worm’s tunic. It looks like these two are finally taking the plunge, lack of genitalia be damned!
Even more shocking, Yara Greyjoy is seen making out with Ellaria Sand. Yara, no! You can do better!
Winding down, we see a hand — probably Tyrion’s — knock over a lion map marker, because symbolism…
…and a pair of characters leap under the water as something explodes above them. I’m willing to bet at least one of those characters is Theon, fleeing the ship fire we’ve seen elsewhere.
Finally, we’ll let the last shot play out as a GIF, as Drogon flies alongside Dany’s Dothraki horde into battle. (Can’t tell if Dany is riding him.)
Jon Snow: “The Great War is here.”
Whew!
Game of Thrones season 7 debuts on July 16.
