LONDON, ENGLAND – APRIL 09: Actor Mark Gatiss speaks on stage during a Q

Mark Gatiss, who has written one episode per season since the reboot began, and writes this week’s episode, is stepping down at the end of series twelve.

According to an interview with Digital Spy, it was noted that no matter what, Mark had been planning to leave with Steven no matter what. He was very pleasant about Peter Capaldi’s decision to be the doctor.

When asked if he had a favorite episode that he’d written, Gatiss cited The Crimson Horror from series 7 with Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman. Crimson Horror takes place in a never before seen part of England, which Gatiss particularly liked. Sweetville is supposed to be the perfect place to live, but no one ever comes out. Madame Vastra, Strax, and Jenny all join Eleventh Doctor and Clara to try to figure out the mystery of the place.

Of course, he says that he’s proudest of his ability to have been able to write An Adventure in Space and Time, which was an episode of how the first episode was written and prepared. It starred David Bradley as William Hartnell and Sacha Dhawan, who is in the run to be the thirteenth Doctor.

This won’t be the last time you see Moffat and Gatiss’s name together though. They’re planning a another new show, not Sherlock or Doctor Who related this time. According to Gatiss, Moffat is desperate to write something new. So what can we expect? Sherlock takes place in the past, Doctor Who takes place in the future, what’s left?

If you could have the duo write anything, what would you want them to write?

Despite the obvious sadness that it is the end of the Moffat era, I always looked forward to Mark Gatiss’s episodes each season, since series 1 in 2005. Not having those episodes under Chibnall will definitely take some getting used to!

How do you feel about Mark Gatiss not coming back and writing under Chibnall?
