History

Gendry was born a bastard, the result of one of King Robert Baratheon’s many extramarital adventures. Although Robert surreptitiously saw that the boy was cared for, Gendry never knew his father.

Working as an armorer’s apprentice in King’s Landing, Gendry grew strong and skilled. Trouble came knocking when Jon Arryn and Ned Stark both figured out the truth of Gendry’s origins. Robert’s wife and first-born child were also onto him, but before they could act, Gendry joined the Night’s Watch and headed north.

En route to Castle Black, Gendry and company were waylaid by Lannister soldiers and brought to Harrenhal. Gendry, Arya and Hot Pie escaped only to fall into the hands of Beric Dondarrion and the Brotherhood Without Banners. The Brotherhood sold Gendry to Melisandre, who was on the hunt for some Kingsblood. She revealed Gendry’s true parentage to him, and brought him to Dragonstone. Once there, she tried to sacrifice him to help Stannis’ cause, but Davos Seaworth let him go.

Gendry was last seen rowing away from Dragonstone for King’s Landing. Odds are he made it back. Since no one is looking for Robert’s bastards anymore, he’s probably gone unmolested, but as the last surviving son of King Robert, he could potentially have a big effect on the plot, even as a bastard.
