History
Like Grandmaester Pycelle or the kindly Maester Luwin, Qyburn trained in scholarly pursuits at the Citadel in Oldtown. But unlike those guys, he was kicked out for doing unspeakable things to human bodies. He got up to god-knows-what for a while before making his way to Harrenhal, where we first met him in season 3. Creepy or not, Qyburn knows his anatomy, and was able to patch up Jaime Lannister’s arm after Locke cut off the Kingslayer’s hand.
From there, Qyburn accompanied Jaime to King’s Landing and became a favorite of Jaime’s sister Cersei, who put him on the Small Council and gave him free reign to indulge in his experiments. He helped Cersei blow up the Sept of Baelor in the season 6 finale, and now that Cersei is ruling the Seven Kingdoms, she’s made him her Hand of the Queen.
Next: Jessica Henwick (Nymeria Sand) almost didn’t return for Game of Thrones season 7
Status
Qyburn is a mysterious character, but if he has a robust working relationship with Cersei Lannister, he can’t be that good a guy. At the end of season 6, he had more power than ever before. What will he do with it? Probably best not to think about it.
