History
Randyll Tarly is a storied warrior and the head of the wealthy House Tarly. He’s also father to Samwell Tarly. Growing up, Sam’s bookish habits didn’t sit well with the militarily minded Randyll, who tried various methods to toughen his son up. In the end, Randyll threatened to kill Sam if he didn’t join the Night’s Watch and give up his claims on the Tarly dynasty. Sam complied, and his younger brother Dickon stepped in as Randyll’s heir.
Randyll saw Sam again when Sam and Gilly stopped by Horn Hill, the ancestral seat of House Tarly, on their way to Oldtown. Sam’s mother and sister were thrilled to see him, but time had not curbed Randyll’s disapproval of his firstborn son. Sam, however, had grown in his time away, and swiped Heartsbane — the family’s Valyrian steel sword — before leaving Horn Hill.

As a family from the reach, House Tarly is technically sworn to the Tyrells. Since Olenna Tyrell has joined up with Daenerys Targaryen, this technically means that Randyll is fighting for her, too. Randyll is powerfully stubborn, though, and may have ideas of his own.
