In his youth, Varys traveled with a theater troupe in Essos, performing in town squares across the continent. That ended when the troupe sold him to a sorcerer who cut off his genitals and left him for dead. But Varys persevered, becoming an excellent thief and information broker. Eventually, Aeyrs Targaryen drafted him as his royal spymaster, and he’s been spinning a web of deceit and trickery ever since.

Although manipulation is his game, Varys’ goals have always been noble: he wants Westeros to have a stable ruler, and he thinks Daenerys Targaryen is the one. To that end, he’s helped her forge connections with people like Ellaria Sand and Olenna Tyrell. Heading into season 7, Varys is part of Dany’s circle of advisors.

Although he’s been away a while, Varys likely still has spies in Westeros. His ability to find out just about anything about anybody could be very useful to a young queen who wants to consolidate her power. Daenerys will probably turn to him for information on enemies like Cersei Lannister and Euron Greyjoy, as well as intel on troop movements and the like.
