Yara Greyjoy

History

Yara is the daughter of Balon Greyjoy, the former ruler of the Iron Islands. When she was young, her brother Theon was shipped off to Winterfell after her father’s failed rebellion, but Yara remained and became Balon’s prized pupil.

We first met Yara in season 2, in one of the show’s more awkward sibling reunions. Despite living in a sexist society, Yara is a widely respected warrior and captain at the outbreak at the start of the War of the Five Kings. Yara was sent to capture Deepwood Motte, a feat she accomplished before riding to council Theon against holding Winterfell against the Northerners.

After Theon is captured by Ramsay Bolton, Yara gathers a crew of the Iron Islands’ best warriors and attempts to rescue her brother, only to find Theon unwilling to leave Ramsay. After Balon’s death, Yara attempts to crown herself queen of the Iron Islands, only to thwarted by her uncle Euron. Fleeing with a now-free Theon, Yara takes her fleet to Meereen and joins up with Daenerys. With the Dragon Queen’s help, she hopes to take the Iron Islands for herself.
