Video: Game of Thrones welcomes back another long-absent character

Game of Thrones season 6 brought back a lot of characters we hadn’t seen in a while — Bran, Hodor, the Hound, Edmure Tully, the Blackfish, etc. But it couldn’t get to everyone. For that, we had to wait until tonight.

Yes, tonight, a character last seen in season 3 finally returned to our screens: Gendry Waters, bastard son of Robert Baratheon and smith extraordinaire. Davos Seaworth, who you’ll remember freed Gendry from his prison on Dragonstone back when Stannis and Melisandre were hanging out there, went looking for him after he smuggled Tyrion into King’s Landing so the littlest Lannister could catch up with his older brother. Naturally, Gendry has spent most of his time since returning to King’s Landing smithing.

Also natural: he’s been practicing how to fight with a warhammer, which is the same weapon his father favored. It must run in the family. After he agreed to return with Davos and Tyrion to Dragonstone, Gendry had a chance to use his homemade warhammer against some Gold Cloaks who were harassing the trio. Finally, he met with the King in the North Jon Snow, and they bonded over their dead dads’ old friendship.

And now he’s off to the North to hunt a wight! Quite a lot happened to Gendry for his first appearance in four years.
