Video: Gwendoline Christie talks about Tormund and Brienne

One of the unexpected hits from Game of Thrones season 6 was the blossoming “romance” between Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) and Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju). I put that word in quotes because whatever romance there is seems pretty one-sided; Tormund is clearly into Brienne, but there’s no indication that she reciprocates. In fact, she looks put off by the whole thing.

Nonetheless, the relationship has caught on with the fan base. We got some flashes of it in season 7, as when Tormund watches Brienne and Podrick Payne spar in the Winterfell courtyard, or when Tormund tells the Hound he wants to make super-powered babies with Brienne. According to Christie, who appeared on Late NIght with Seth Meyers in the wake of season 7 ending, Hivju keeps up Tormund’s lascivious antics even after the cameras stop rolling.

So Hivju suggestively eats sandwiches in Christie’s direction all the time. It’s a good thing she’s able to take it in good humor.

Christie also reiterated that Tormund’s initial looks were largely unscripted — the Tormund-Brienne romance is purely the product of these two actors doing their thing.

By the by, we’re currently in the brief period between the end of the last season and when the cast members get their scripts for the new one, so Christie couldn’t have talked about what was coming if she wanted to. The horrifying story about a proposed bathroom stall selfie will do in a pinch.
