Welcome to another episode of Take the Black, Winter is Coming’s Game of Thrones podcast. This week, we are joined by WiC editor Dan Selcke and writer Richard Preston. And of course, the lovely Sarah Weymes is here are well. This week, we look back and reflect on the first four episodes of Game of Thrones season 7. Now that a little time has passed, how do they hold up?

Topics include:

  • We all agreed that the cold open in the premiere episode, “Dragonstone,” was the best in entire series.
  • In hindsight, we still think Jon and Sansa should have gone through their talking points before making announcements in front of the Northern Lords.
  • Euron Greyjoy was rather delightful season 7, which was particularly surprising after his his dull appearances in season 6.
  • Some of us really enjoyed Sam’s poop montage. Others not so much.
  • We all loved Daenerys’ war room scene in “Stormborn.” It was extremely empowering to see this group of women in charge.
  • We loved the battle on the high seas at the end of “Stormborn,” both for the terrific action filmmaking and the emotional resonance of the Greyjoy family drama. Plus, season 7 made better use of the Sand Snakes than ever before.
  • “The Queen’s Justice” was pretty great top to bottom, from Sansa competently running Winterfell to Dany meeting Jon to the finale corker of a scene between Jaime and Olenna Tyrell. “Tell Cersei. I want her to know it was me.”
  • Bran and Arya both returned to Winterfell in season 7. Were the Stark family reunions muted this year?
  • We all agree that the high point of the first four episodes was the Loot Train Battle in “The Spoils of War.” We discuss it in detail.

As usual, Take the Black leans heavily on the NSFW side (beware of F-bombs). You’ve been warned.
