Moffat hints at a darker Doctor Who Christmas Special than expected

According to Digital Spy, this Doctor Who Christmas Special will be darker than what we’re used to — very dark.

With what looked like was going to be a happy reunion special, with Bill Potts, the First Doctor, Bill and Polly, and perhaps even Clara Oswald, it might actually be darker than expected. It’s safe to say the Doctor will not be growing old in a town called Christmas this regeneration.

According to Steven Moffat, who was talking at London Screenwriter’s Festival about Sherlock and how kindness stops loneliness, he dropped a hint that might worry fans of Doctor Who. Especially about the special.

"“[Sherlock]’s good because for all he protests about it, there are people he cares about. So, kindness is what makes a unit of us. So if you are sane and rational, kindness is by far the best path. There isn’t anything rational about being vile and awful and evil. It’s not actually a good strategy.”Moffat then warned: “Prepare for that to be contradicted on Doctor Who on Christmas Day.”"

What could possibly happen to make the Doctor so angry? We know that, for some reason, he doesn’t want to change again. While the anger of a new regeneration seemed to come out of nowhere for the character, it looks like it will be sticking around.

However, rule one: Moffat lies. This is a bit of a contradiction to what he said in Doctor Who Magazine:

"“The one thing I have to say is, it’s Christmas Day, we’re gonna keep it funny, and we’re gonna keep it lively, as well as sad. If we cry, they” – by which he means the audience – “won’t. We want them to cry. So Doctor Who will laugh bravely into that good night.”"

Or, maybe that crying is the darkness that Moffat is talking about.

So…which will it be for the Doctor Who Christmas Special? Dark and vile, or funny and lively? If we’re going on how the show led into the special, coupled with the same direction and writing as the previous two episodes, I would say there has to be some drama.

However, we’ve been assured by Peter Capaldi that the actual regeneration scene is a poignant one. The transformation from Twelve to Thirteen has gotten the Peter Capaldi stamp of approval.

Funny, dark, sad and poignant. Sounds like another episode of Doctor Who to me.
