Doctober Who? Favorite Scary Aliens: Daleks
BBC, Daleks
In honor of October, I decided to do 30 scary aliens that have graced our screens in the past 50 years. We’re going to start with a classic. The Daleks.
On an anecdotal note, I thought that I would point out a reason I decided to start with the Daleks. Besides the fact they’re the most classic Doctor Who villain, they’re also the first aliens that scared me! This is especially possibly pathetic as I was 18 the first time I started watching Doctor
Who.
More from Winter is Coming

- Final season of Star Trek: Discovery will have “a lot of action, a lot of adventure, a lot of fun”
But I couldn’t help it! I saw the episode Dalek, with Christopher Eccleston, and it was the voice of
the Dalek that really scared me (thanks, Nicholas Briggs!), for some reason. Not enough to make me never watch it again (obviously), but it really unnerved me, and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to handle the Dalek episodes.
As I’m here now, you can tell I quickly got over my fear. I will never be able to explain why that episode made me so uneasy, but it’s something I’ll never forget.
As a more seasoned fan, especially since I’ve started to watch the Classic episodes, the Dalek story continues to be one that just freaks me out, for lack of a better word. As we see the history of the Daleks, from the Kaleds to the evolution, to the Daleks, while it’s a great story, it’s also one that kept my heart pumping a bit too fast.
What can I say? I guess the Daleks will always have my heart…in a pumping fast slightly scary running away way.
However, many of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who, both in the Classics and in the New Series have the Daleks as the main villain, or feature them in some way. I guess you never know how your first viewing experience is going to change!
