Video: See how the Zombie Polar Bear in “Beyond the Wall” came to life

Because undead zombies and ice demons weren’t enough, Game of Thrones added a zombie polar bear to the mix in season 7’s “Beyond the Wall.” And now, thanks to HBO’s continuing behind-the-scenes series, The Game Revealed, we can see just how the undead monster was brought to life. Look upon it and tremble:

As you can see, the special effects and stunt work involved in creating this terrifying scene were incredibly involved. From the wire work used to pull that one poor sap off screen to the CGI layering that sets the fake bear on fake fire, the craftsmanship and skill on display is jaw-dropping.

The crew put in the work, too, with Kit Harington talking about how confusing it all was, what with filming it inside a big green CGI box. And of course, it’s hard to act opposite a huge guy in green cover-alls telling you he’s a bear. “No you’re not,” Rory McCann (the Hound) said, remembering surreal times on. “Your name is Toby.”

Visual Effects supervisor Joe Bauer added that, with the limited visibility involved with a simulated blizzard, the attack mimicked that of a shark on the high seas. So simulate a shark attack in the snow, but light the shark on fire. Brilliant.
