Doctor Who’s Alex Kingston to join Sky One’s A Discovery of Witches
BBC, Alex Kingston
Yesterday, it was announced Alex Kingston would join a cast of wonderful female actors to portray the book A Discovery of Witches.
Alex Kingston is one of the many female actors to join Sky One’s A Discovery of Witches, according to an exclusive at Radio Times. The television show is being set by ex-Doctor Who producer Julie Gardner as part of Bad Wolf Productions.
A bit on the nose, isn’t it?
According to the series description, it looks like quite the interesting bit of work for Ms. Kingston to sink her teeth into, literally and figuratively.
"Brilliant historian Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer, Hacksaw Ridge) is a witch denying her own heritage. But when she unexpectedly calls up an ancient, bewitched manuscript from Oxford’s Bodleian library, one that was thought by the creatures to be lost and could answer the mysteries of their existence, she finds herself thrown into the heart of a dangerous mystery – and into the path of the enigmatic geneticist and vampire Matthew Clairmont. (Matthew Goode, Downton Abbey)"
Alex Kingston will be playing the central character, Sarah Bishop. She is the aunt of the lead and a “powerful witch and fierce protector of her family”. While I don’t think this will be like Harry Potter, I’m down for any female-led show about witches and vampires. Especially with such wonderful actors!
Kingston revealed to the Radio Times that she’s thrilled to be working with producer Julie Gardner and ex-BBC commissioner Jane Tranter. She also mentioned her love of Cardiff, calling it her “home away from home”.
However, Kingston isn’t the only actress that people who are fans of Steven Moffat, current Doctor Who producer, will recognize. Lindsay Duncan, who played Lady Smallwood on Sherlock, as well as Louise Brealey, who people will remember as Molly Hooper, will also be in the show.
