In February 2018, Romana, Leela and Ace will become involved in Gallifrey’s greatest conflict in upcoming box set ‘Gallifrey: Time War’. But it won’t just be the Daleks that they’ll be facing, as the War Master becomes involved!
Yesterday, Big Finish revealed more details of their upcoming series, Gallifrey: Time War. The series will feature regulars Lalla Ward, Louise Jameson and Sophie Aldred as Romana, Leela and Ace, respectively.
However, another major figure from the Doctor’s life is about to show up. And unlike his other old friends, this isn’t someone he’d be too pleased to see. The War Master is also going to feature in Gallifrey, as played by Sir Derek Jacobi.

Gallifrey as a spin-off series has, perhaps unsurprisingly, been building up to the Time War for a long time. However, during its first six seasons, it couldn’t reference it directly, due to issues with licensing. (Originally, Big Finish were only allowed to include storylines and characters featured in the Classic Series. Anything from the New Series, including the Time War, was off-limits.)
When Big Finish obtained the rights to New Series material in 2015, they still only foreshadowed the Time War, at least in Gallifrey. The series has yet to show the conflict from the perspective of all the main characters in this spin-off series. But in February 2018, that’s finally going to change.
Box set details
The box set will include four episodes, the titles of which will be:
- Celestial Intervention by David Llewellyn
- Soldier Obscura by Tim Foley
- The Devil You Know by Scott Handcock
- Desperate Measures by Matt Fitton
Scott Handcock, director and writer of Gallifrey: Time War, reveals more.
"I’ve felt very lucky to play in the Gallifrey sandbox for its most recent releases, but it’s an even bigger thrill to take us into the Time War and explore how that epic, devastating event impacts upon the lives of our characters."
Gallifrey has been a series that I’ve personally enjoyed for a long time, so it’s fantastic that they’re finally covering something as major as the Time War.
New ‘War Master’ title
In other War Master news, the title for his own upcoming box set due in December has been revealed. Currently, the cover that’s on Big Finish’s website shows the title as The War Master: Only the Good.
There are two things I really appreciate about this. The first is that it’s a great reflection of the War Doctor’s first box set, Only the Monstrous. The second is that, since there is a subtitle, there’s a slight chance that there could be more than one War Master box set in the future. We can only hope!
